With the trade deadline approaching, the Chicago White Sox will be in sell mode as they prepare to acquire pieces for 2014. As the White Sox build for the future, it is time to highlight some of their greatest assets which will most likely be traded at the deadline.
1. Alex Rios – After a bit of a slump going into the All-Star break and a benching by manager Robin Ventura mid-game on Friday, Rios struck back by hitting a grand slam on Saturday.
Rios will likely be moved before the deadline as he may have not been hustling enough on Friday. Many rumors began flowing after Rios was taken out in the game that he could have been traded, however, this was not the case. Rios may not bring as much back in a package as a starting pitcher, but the Sox could use depth at all levels which trading Rios could provide.
2. Jake Peavy – Rios wasn’t the only star this weekend for the White Sox; starting pitcher Jake Peavy made his return from the disabled list on Saturday and pitched six strong
innings, giving up two earned runs (four total runs) while garnering his seventh victory of the season.
Many scouts were in attendance and it seems highly unlikely that Peavy will be finishing out the remainder of his contract that has him in Chicago until the end of next year. With starting pitching being a need for many contending teams, such as the Red Sox, there is definitely a market for Peavy and he should bring a good haul of prospects back. The only question is whether the White Sox will eat a large portion of his contract or if they will use this as an opportunity to salary dump. Of course the better prospects will come with the Sox eating a large amount of his contract.
3. Jesse Crain – Crain was a little overworked by the White Sox before the All-Star break resulting in the relief pitcher being placed on the disabled list at probably the worst time for the club. While trying to build up the value of tradeable assets on the White Sox’ Major League roster, Jesse Crain being sidelined with an injury couldn’t have come at a worse time.
Crain had an impressive scoreless innings streak and his value seemed to be maxing out just as he was injured and lost his scoreless appearance streak. Crain hopes to be back during this current ten-game home stand, the Sox will be hopeful he’ll be able to string together some strong appearances and impress the scouts as he did before his injury. Crain would likely not bring back too much in return but any little bit could help the White Sox Minor League system at this point.
